Charles and Elizabeth arrived in Port Adelaide June 12, 1883 aboard the "Glamis". Charles was a joiner and came to Australia to help establish the United Trades and Labour Council in South Australia. At the time of his early death from heart disease he was the Secretary of the "Eight Hour Day" committee and had worked in Melbourne as well as South Australia.
